Early Years

Our Nursery and Reception classes create the ideal environment for children to take the first steps in their education. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework which incorporates seven key areas of learning:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the world
  • Physical development
  • Expressive arts and design

Alongside learning the basics of literacy and numeracy, the children develop skills and interests through an exciting and diverse range of experiences. Most importantly, children begin their social journey, building positive relationships with their teachers and peers.

Learning through play is the basis of our teaching, with a focus on social, physical and communication skills. There is a wide range of activities each week including ball skills, gym, dance, music, French, Forest School, swimming and topic-related trips and visits. There is also time to develop social skills through play and teacher-led activities.

Every day is an adventure and a time of discovery. We carefully structure the work to help children develop their skills and relationships to enable them to reach their Early Learning Goals milestones by the end of the Reception year, with many children exceeding them.

‘Tapestry’ Learning Journal

We track individual development through an online learning journal called ‘Tapestry’. This enables us to keep you fully informed about your child’s progress and you will be able to access photos, videos and notes about your child.  It is a working partnership between school, parents/carers and the child, so we encourage you to upload photos as well. You will receive an email with a link for you to log in. The site is straightforward to use and has tutorials to help, or we can assist you.

Outdoor Learning

The Nursery forms part of a converted stable block and opens onto a courtyard outdoor learning area. In addition, we also have access to a garden for planting and digging, the Rose Garden and a specially designed Forest School. Allowing children to experience the natural environment outdoors is an important aspect of a child’s education and in the Nursery we make use of the wonderful grounds for walks and nature trails as often as we can.
