EAL: English for International PupilsSUB MENU
Port Regis welcomes children from all over the world and has a department dedicated to EAL (English as an Additional Language). Children whose first language is not English are assessed on arrival and are taught in small groups or on a one to one basis by a specialist EAL teacher.
The four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening are covered along with vocabulary building and grammatical structures. Each child has an individual programme of study and is integrated into mainstream classes as soon as their level of English allows it. Our aim is to enable all children to access the whole curriculum alongside continuing EAL support and close liaison with all subject departments.
Pupils intending to go to a UK senior school will take Common Entrance or the school's own entrance test. Those who come for one year have the opportunity to take the Cambridge KET (Key English Test), PET (Preliminary English Test) and FCE (First Certificate in English) examinations.
We provide an exceptionally supportive and welcoming environment which ensure that children settle quickly and make friends. Pupils of all nationalities and language backgrounds are fully integrated into boarding life, live in a boarding house with children of their own age and enjoy a full programme of evening and weekend activities. Pupils' own languages and traditions are recognised and celebrated, which contributes to a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
The Head of EAL is Mrs Julia Cardoza.
