Motcombe Park Sports Club

Port Regis has a nationwide reputation for the quality of its sports provision for under 13s and welcomes visiting teams from abroad as well as sending out its top teams overseas on tour. We are one of the IAPS’s selected venues for its national tournaments in netball and we host a large number of high profile events in rugby sevens, athletics and cross-country.

For boys the main team games are rugby, football, hockey and cricket. Girls are coached predominantly in hockey, netball, rounders and tennis as well as a little lacrosse. The school has its own astroturf pitch for all-weather play, a nine-hole golf course, a rifle range and extensive playing fields marked out freshly each week for matches against other schools in the region. Parents from all schools are warmly welcomed on match days to cheer their children on.

The school’s indoor sports complex, which comprises two sports halls opened by the Princess Royal and Her Majesty the Queen in 1980 and 1990 respectively, serves as a National Centre for Junior Gymnastics and facilitates expert coaching with the finest equipment for beginners and national team members alike. We also have two squash courts, a heated swimming pool, indoor cricket nets, and marked-out spaces for judo, karate, badminton, basketball, volleyball and fencing.

In recent years, Port Regis pupils have won Sports Scholarships (or All-Rounder Scholarships with a sporting element) to, in alphabetical order: Bryanston, Canford, Cheltenham Ladies' College, Clayesmore, Epsom College, Glenalmond, King's Bruton, King's Taunton, Kingswood, Harrow, Marlborough, Millfield, Prior Park, Radley, Rugby, Sherborne, Sherborne Girls, St Mary's Calne and Wellington.

The Director of Sport is Huw Jones. Huw captained his university’s 1st XV rugby team and was a member of the England rugby squad training weeks at under-16 and under-18 levels. He represented Berkshire and played semi-professional rugby for Reading RFC. He holds coaching qualifications in rugby, football, cricket and swimming and still competes in marathons (including the London Marathon) and triathlons. Huw is also the school's Senior Master and a member of the school's senior management team.

Senior schools comment on Port Regis pupils' confidence and independence.
