June is STEAM Month at Port Regis, and we have lots of exciting activities taking place! Last week, Years 1 and 2 spent the morning in Cunningham learning all about biomimicry. The children studied aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, looking at how animals are designed to move at speed. They also looked at examples where designers, engineers, and scientists created products and inventions using nature as their inspiration. For example, the kingfisher bird inspired the Shinkansen bullet train, which improved efficiency, fuel consumption and noise pollution, and the cheetah inspired the McLaren car. The pupils then made balloon cars using kinetic energy to create a pushing force, enabling their cars to move forward. Pupils were then given the option to decorate their cars as a cheetah, peregrine falcon, or shark!
